The swine influenza virus that almost always effected pigs has mutated into a form that can effect humans. The worst part is that this disease has spread worldwide in a very short span of time. So far there is no vaccine for this virus, even though WHO is working hard to develop a vaccine as soon as possible.
Almost everyone is at risk. So far, New York city has been hardest hit in our country. The health and government officials have advised to avoid crowded areas and pay special attention to personal hygiene. The news and media coverage has been focusing on swine virus for the past few days. It is highly recommended that everyone stays informed. Though the name of the virus is ‘Swine flu”, the swine producers insist that it is safe to eat swine. It may be safe to eat swine, but it will be hard for the people to eat swine after a disease has been named after it. A few years back we saw the beef market crash due to a “mad cow disease”, same might apply to the swine flu. The swine producers are bound to be affected by this disease, which means, possibly more job losses to the pork producers and the people associated with the pork industry.

Many countries have already imposed bann on pork imports. Egypt has ordered all pigs to be killed (hopefully they are not planning on exporting the pork). But on the other hand many say that the name “Swine Flu” is incorrect and the swine flu should actually be called H1N1 strain. We heard President Obama saying H1N1 as-well.
