Astronauts deal with flooded toilet in orbit

Everyday millions of people face clogged sewers and drains on the planet Earth. Almost all of those people know that unclogging the sewer line is not rocket science, but recently rocket scientists who happened to be in orbit faced a problem with their toilet. We can only speculate what clogged the toilet on a space shuttle, but whatever clogged the toilet, it is another proof that a crowded toilet is bound to get clogged even if it is a space toilet. Apparently the space station is over crowded and the toilet bowl could not handle the extra traffic.

(AP) — “The bathroom lines at the already crowded space shuttle and space station complex got a lot longer Sunday because of a flooded toilet. One of two commodes aboard the international space station malfunctioned, right in the middle of complicated robotic work being conducted by the two crews. The pump separator apparently flooded.”

Can a toilet cause a clog in a sewer pipe?

Sewer clogs occur due to many reasons and toilet bowls can be blamed about 10% of time according to our mechanics in the field.
Most of the times toilets get clogged due to paper products and when a clogged toilet is unclogged the clog moves down the line and may result in a sewer clog. Paper towels, disposable and cloth diapers and feminine products cause many problems in the sewer main. These products do not deteriorate quickly. They should be disposed of in the garbage.

Yes, we know, this blog is not about a TV show, but we just had to write about Susan Boyle. She did surprise anyone and everyone that saw/heard her sing. As the expressions of the audience showed, they never in a million years would have though that Susan Boyle would sing like that. Simply amazing.

Sewer Flies?

Sewer flies are small in size and have their wings pointing upwards. They multiply in a moist area and usually grow quickly in an area backed up with sewer water. Sewer flies do not transfer diseases as they do not bite, but they may transfer bacteria that is on their bodies. It is a good idea to wear a mask when walking in an area with sewer flies. It may sound funny but the sewer flies try to go into your mouth, this may not be written in text books but it is a first hand experience that is talking .
It is very important to get rid of a sewer back up as along with dealing with the sewer water smell, you will also have to deal with possible breeding of sewer flies. Many people might see sewer flies even though they do not have a sewer back up. This is possibly due to loose sewer caps. The sewer flies might be breeding in your main trap, if your sewer caps are not tightly placed onto your main trap, the flies can fly out of the loose area of the caps.
We have seen the sewer flies in kitchen sink drains as-well, so it is not a certain thing that sewer flies will only breed in sewer water. The sewer flies breed when the water is backed for a few days and the backed up water starts to turn “murky“. You can try to use any regular insect killing spray to get rid of the sewer flies but if the spraying does not work, you will have to locate the source of the flies. Sewer Rats!

That is right, the rats do get into sewer lines. Every once in a while we do run into sewer clogs that were caused by sewer rats. Last week one of our mechanics pulled out a rat instead of a tree roots! It was his first encounter with a with dead rat wrapped around his sewer cleaning snake. As you can imagine it was not a pretty sight.
Being that it was our mechanics first such experience, he shared his experience with others and everyone had a light laugh. Our mechanic did not suspect anything odd with the sewer line or expect such a surprise (usually they do not expect surprises ), he took it as a normal clog with possible tree roots, since there were many trees on the front yard. He suspected something was wrong when he snaked the sewer line a few times, but every time he unclogged the sewer the water backed up again. He didn’t feel much resistance in the sewer line so was more inclined on believing the clog was due to muck or grease, but with muck and grease clogging a sewer line you can still feel the stoppage. He was determined to find out what was clogging the sewer line so he kept on trying. The sewer line itself was not more than 50ft long and the city sewer was flowing fine. There was no sign of a possible break in the line and yet, the sewer line was still clogging up after he unclogged it many time.
After snaking the sewer line a number of times without pulling back anything he finally pulled out a dead rat wrapped around his sewer snake. There was no way the rat could have come from the house side of the sewer line, since the caps on the trap were in place. Finally the clog was taken care of. The final step was to run a water test to make sure the sewer wouldn’t back up again.The water test was performed successfully without any backup.

Length of your sewer line

How long is your sewer line?

If you are going to try and unclog your sewer line, you should know the length of your sewer line. Why? Because your sewer line could be lets say, 100ft long, and the snake you are using has a length of 50ft. If the clog is within 50ft, you are in luck and you might try to use the same length all the time. But, if your clog builds up further down the pipe, the 50ft snake definitely will not work. You either will need to attach another snake or use a longer snake all together. Generally, the sewer length is less than 75ft. That is, from your house trap out to the city sewer connection. In some cases, the sewers run longer than 75ft and can even run upto 150-200ft. The longer the sewer pipe, the more access points it generally has.
You can basically guess the length of your sewer line. Check to see if your house trap is towards the front of house or towards the rear of the house. If the main house trap is by the front, then guess or measure the distance from the front of the house to pretty much the center of the street.
If your main sewer trap is towards the back of the house, then you have to guess or measure the length from the back of the house to center of the street, and add a few more extra feet to cover for turns the sewer pipe makes. As we have stated in previous posts, the longer the sewer line is or the further the clog is, the harder it is to unclog the pipe. If you live in Queens, Brooklyn or The Bronx, your sewer lines should pretty much be less than 50ft (Most cases). If you live in Nassau or Suffolk counties, your sewer line should be pretty much between 50-75ft(most cases). Some houses do have sewers that are 100ft or longer and those homeowners should be more agressive in keeping their sewers maintained, to avoid tough back ups.
