Sewer Clog results in major damage if not taken care of immediately. In many instances a home owner has to deal with a basement flooded along with a clogged sewer. Most of the time a sewer backs up without any warning and the clog is seen as a surprise by the home owner. To avoid these unpleasant surprises a home owner can take preemptive measures, such as:

Avoid pouring grease in the drains

Avoid flushing napkins, paper towels and other sanitary items

Get the sewer line electrically cleaned to cut tree roots grown in the sewer line

Make sure you have easy access to your house trap

Can a toilet cause a clog in a sewer pipe?

Toilets use a lot of water and many times certain items are flushed down the toilet that can end up clogging the main sewer line. This is not the most common reason why sewers get clogged. Sewer clogs occur due to many reasons and toilet bowls can be blamed about 10% of time according to our mechanics in the field.
Most of the times toilets get clogged due to paper products and when a clogged toilet is unclogged the clog moves down the line and may result in a sewer clog. Paper towels, disposable and cloth diapers and feminine products cause many problems in the sewer main. These products do not deteriorate quickly. They should be disposed of in the garbage.

The sewer water probably carries the most types of diseases and bacteria than any other place. You can never be careful enough. To prevent sewer back ups, you should get your sewer line snaked as a preventative measure. The following sewer was clogged due to tampons and grease. Our mechanic had to snake the line a few times before it unclogged. While the mechanic was snaking the sewer, the rain water kept bringing in more water, putting pressure on the mechanic to unclog the sewer before the customers basement got flooded. Our mechanics are always concerned about our customers, and this mechanic is no different. He unclogged the sewer before it could overflow and cause damage to the customers basement.

Clogged sewer is a problem that people want to avoid, since a clogged sewer means, smell and sewage. The following video shows that a clogged sewer line can build up quite a bit of a pressure. In this case, the sewer back caused water to backup into the back yard, floor drains, basement shower and the basement toilet. If the mechanics had not kept his hands on the cap, the sewer water probably would have been all over him. It is very important to be careful while opening the sewer caps. In rare cases you can get injured if you get hit by the sewer cap.

We can relate our sewer service to the surprise the judges and the audience got, many of our customers do not believe our prices until we actually do the job. Many other sewer and drain companies simply wonder how and why we have kept our prices so low for so long. It will be 14 years in June 2009. Our answer is simple, “keep the customers happy and have them coming back again and again.” We love to see our customers save money by using our services.
We use similar equipment, if not better, as used by sewer and drain companies across the United States. We guarantee all work we do and the best part is, we do not charge extra for jobs done on weekends, nights or holidays. Any hour of the day and any day of the week, A$49.95 Any Sewer or Drain, Inc will unclog your sewer or drain and charge you $49.95 for any one sewer or drain.

This is a floor drain located in a boiler room. Water is backing up here because it is the lowest spot in the house. We know it is a sewer back up, because when the toilets are flushed we can see the dirty water coming out of the floor drain. To unclog this problem, you have to gain access to the house trap.
You can try to snake it from the floor drain itself, but, good luck with that. Snaking from the floor drain itself will be a waste of time as you more than likely will not be able to unclog the sewer via the floor drain.
This particular job also had a flood in the back yard due to the sewer back up. Once the sewer was unclogged, this floor drain along with the back yard drain was unclogged.

Sewer pipes usually last decades before collapsing or shifting but with trees on the sidewalks and front lawn, the chances of a sewer line getting messed up rise a little bit. The sewer line is usually ignored by home owners until there is a problem. This is almost like driving a car without changing the engine oil until the car asks for an oil change. This can only go on for a certain period of time, but when the car gets old timely oil change becomes more important.
Same with the sewer lines, as the sewer pipe gets old it needs constant and timely attention. You need to do this especially if you have tree root problem. For old pipes, it is not only tree roots that cause trouble, over the years water running through the sewer line erodes the sewer line and dirt starts to fill up in the sewer line. This is not a problem obviously, until the sewer gets clogged and the home owner has to change the sewer line.

Home owners have an option to find out the health of their sewer line. Sewer cameras have been around for a while, many municipalities use robotic sewer cameras to inspect the city and county sewer system.
If you are having constant back ups due to roots or muck stoppages, you might want to consider a camera inspection for your sewer line. This will eliminate the guess work and you will see exactly what is in your pipe and how your sewer pipe looks from inside. Here are a few videos of camera inspections we performed recently. Some camera inspections were requested by the customers and others were recommended by our technicians.

As you can see in the video and pictures aboce, people do give special attention to their toilets. There is nothing wrong with it until there is a clog and the toilet overflows or needs to be removed.
Over the years we have seen many toilets, as you can imagine, maybe more toilets than anyone reading this post. But, looking at the toilets in different parts of the world, we can easily say, we have not seen much. The design and material looks awesome in the pictures. Wonder if these toilets have an auto unclogging function as-well. So far we found a Swiss self cleaning toilet.

How about the Australian toilets? Do they really swirl in opposite direction? Looking at these videos it looks like the Australian toilets do not swirl at all. Yes, it is news for us. We were hoping to see it swirl it in the opposite direction.

Sewer flies are small in size and have their wings pointing upwards. They multiply in a moist area and usually grow quickly in an area backed up with sewer water. Sewer flies do not transfer diseases as they do not bite, but they may transfer bacteria that is on their bodies. It is a good idea to wear a mask when walking in an area with sewer flies. It may sound funny but the sewer flies try to go into your mouth, this may not be written in text books but it is a first hand experience that is talking .
It is very important to get rid of a sewer back up as along with dealing with the sewer water smell, you will also have to deal with possible breeding of sewer flies. Many people might see sewer flies even though they do not have a sewer back up. This is possibly due to loose sewer caps. The sewer flies might be breeding in your main trap, if your sewer caps are not tightly placed onto your main trap, the flies can fly out of the loose area of the caps.
We have seen the sewer flies in kitchen sink drains as-well, so it is not a certain thing that sewer flies will only breed in sewer water. The sewer flies breed when the water is backed for a few days and the backed up water starts to turn “murky“. You can try to use any regular insect killing spray to get rid of the sewer flies but if the spraying does not work, you will have to locate the source of the flies. The source will more than likely be a sewer or drain trap. If you need help locating your sewer trap, we are here to help. You can write us an E-mail with your situation and we will give you a free advice.

That is right, the rats do get into sewer lines. Every once in a while we do run into sewer clogs that were caused by sewer rats. Last week one of our mechanics pulled out a rat instead of a tree roots! It was his first encounter with a with dead rat wrapped around his sewer cleaning snake. As you can imagine it was not a pretty sight.
Being that it was our mechanics first such experience, he shared his experience with others and everyone had a light laugh. Our mechanic did not suspect anything odd with the sewer line or expect such a surprise (usually they do not expect surprises ), he took it as a normal clog with possible tree roots, since there were many trees on the front yard. He suspected something was wrong when he snaked the sewer line a few times, but every time he unclogged the sewer the water backed up again. He didn’t feel much resistance in the sewer line so was more inclined on believing the clog was due to muck or grease, but with muck and grease clogging a sewer line you can still feel the stoppage. He was determined to find out what was clogging the sewer line so he kept on trying. The sewer line itself was not more than 50ft long and the city sewer was flowing fine. There was no sign of a possible break in the line and yet, the sewer line was still clogging up after he unclogged it many time.
After snaking the sewer line a number of times without pulling back anything he finally pulled out a dead rat wrapped around his sewer snake. There was no way the rat could have come from the house side of the sewer line, since the caps on the trap were in place. Finally the clog was taken care of. The final step was to run a water test to make sure the sewer wouldn’t back up again. The water test was performed successfully without any backup.
